How much difference can Low-E window glass really make in the Texas heat?
Every sample started at 75°F and was exposed to the same 500-watt halogen lamp for five minutes:
• Clear glass: 82.5°F — 7.5° increase
• Cardinal 270 + i89: 77.9°F — 2.9° increase
• Cardinal 366 + i89: 77.0°F — 2.0° increase
• Cardinal 340 + i89: 76.2°F — 1.2° increase
• Cardinal 452+ + i89: 76.4°F — 1.4° increase
Cardinal 340 produced the smallest temperature increase, but it also allows less visible light into the home. In my professional opinion, Cardinal 452+ paired with i89 is one of the best-balanced Low-E combinations currently available—providing exceptional solar-heat control, improved insulation, strong UV... no—UV protection, and more natural light than 340.
This demonstration was not performed in a certified laboratory and should not replace official NFRC performance data. It was designed as a practical comparison, with each sample tested using the same starting temperature, heat source, distance and exposure time. Actual results will vary depending on the complete window, frame, installation, orientation and outdoor conditions.
